Hi all, we have a 9 year old pedigreed boy in need of a home, please share: Meet MOWGLI, a real life “man cub”!
Mowgli has been an important part of our lives for the past 9 years (he turns 9yrs at the end of March). For most of his life Mowgli has been an only child. Our velcro dog spent his earlier years following my husband everywhere – training with him for trail running events like The Otter Race and the Comrades Marathon, cycle races – you name it, Mowgli was the ultimate training companion. When he was younger we even entered him into dog shows – he won Best in Breed several times as well as Best in Group. Mowgli is a pure bred Red ACD – he comes from Linfell Kennels in KZN. As a result he has had all the necessary testing done and even has had his hips and shoulders graded. He was neutered around the age of 5yrs old after we decided that we did not want to breed with him – from the beginning that was never out intention when getting an ACD. We wanted him as an active companion who would suit our active lifestyle. When Mowgli was 2yr we introduced another male ACD into the family – He was tolerated for the first 3 years and then the fighting started. This prompted us to neuter him as well as the other ACD but there was no improvement in their aggressive behaviour towards each other. We chose to rehome the other ACD in order to keep the peace and at the time I was pregnant with our first child. Mowgli did not take kindly to us introducing a child into our home however up until this point I would say he tolerated the first child (now 2 children) but would frequently growl or snap at them if they came close to him whilst napping or eating, or would nip their legs if they ran past or rode their push bikes. We have managed his grumpiness around the children reasonably well up until now but recently he went for one of our boys and bit him in the face, drawing blood for the first time. This has raised great concern- to the point that we feel it’s best to look at removing Mowgli too. I MUST STRESS the fact that Mowgli is NOT an aggressive dog towards humans.
Mowgli prefers the company of Humans – in fact he considers himself to be human too. And as a result he doesn’t enjoy other animals – especially not male dogs. He may tolerate a home with an existing female dog who is smaller than him as he gets along well with my mother-in-laws 2 female pekingese and their ACD who is a female. I’m unsure about cats? He does not like small children but will be happy in a home with older children. This is simply because he was never raised with children as a pup – you can’t blame him for not wanting to be around children. This is just how the breed is and to be honest we always knew we may encounter problems as this was made clear by the breeder from the beginning. He would be best suited to a couple who have the time to spend walking him and giving him the attention he craves. Even though he is 9yrs old he is still very active and enjoys a long walk at least once every second day.
He LOVES to lick faces, arms and legs – anyone who takes him must tolerate his unusual way of showing Affection. He is an indoor dog – he will not cope well being left outdoors at night. He sleeps with us in our bedroom and has another bed in our lounge. He goes to parlour every 4 weeks for grooming and is in an excellent physical condition. He is a hardy dog with no allergies or skin/medical issues.
We are based in Kloof, KZN but would happily look at rehoming him outside of KZN if necessary.
